A world full of inconsistences, why smart people dont find simple fixes

The train tracks... I was wondering why the engineers dint made a simple way to combine train tracks to avoid the tam tam train sound, and to avoid the usure to the train tracks from the wheels passing over the small gaps I know the gaps between the train tracks are left there because the train tracks compress and extend on the enviroment temperature, and their length differs at different moments in time. But I dont know why the engineers decided to do one cut between tracks, allowing gaps of a few centemeters where the wheels would fall and rise while passing through They could have did a .-' shape cut like in the picture below, this would still alow a few centemeters between tracks to compress and to expand but would always keep the wheel of the train on the track, without the tam tam sound and without the usure of the tracks and wheels... Is something very simple and rudimentar, well and not implemented
